Inner Views: Asian American Voices

WHAT: Inner Views is intended to explore Asian American identities and experiences. Playwrights from all over the country submitted new plays, 5-15 minutes in length that explore perspectives of Asian Americans (Pacific Rim or Indian Subcontinental cultures). The ten selected plays will be directed by five local directors and performed May 14-21, 2010 at Mesa College's Apolliad Theatre.

WHEN: Opens: Friday, May 14, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.

Closes: Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.

Run: May 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 at 8:00 p.m. and May 16 at 2:00 p.m.

WHERE: Mesa College’s Apolliad Theatre, 7250 Mesa College Drive, San Diego, CA, 92111

WHO: SDAART is a professional non-profit performing arts organization which has produced during 15 years 35 plays including five world premieres. The La Jolla Playhouse recently named SDAART as their resident theatre company for the 2010/11 season, during which SDAART will produce Julia Cho's BFE as well as the second annual Inner Views 10-minute new play showcase.

Inner Views: Asian American Voices is intended to explore Asian American identities and experiences. Playwrights from all over the country submitted new, original plays, 5-15 minutes in length that explore perspectives of Asian Americans (Pacific Rim or Indian Subcontinental cultures). The ten selected plays will be produced by SDAART May 14-21, 2010 at Mesa College with local directors, actors, designers, and dramaturgs.

Auditions:

Monday April 5, 6:00 pm-9:00 pm Apolliad Theatre, Mesa College
Thursday April 8, 6:00 pm-9:00 pm Room C 101, Mesa College

There are multiple roles, all ages and ethnicities.

No need to prepare anything for the audition, but you are free to use a prepared piece if you wish.

Hip-Hop Kim-Bop: A Korean Herstory in the City of Angels

San Diego Asian American Repertory Theatre enters its 15th season by announcing the upcoming production of Hip-Hop Kim-Bop: A Korean Herstory in the City of Angels, a new play by Elise Kim Prosser, Ph.D. Hip-Hop Kim-Bop is a contemporary comedy in which four women all named Kim meet at jury duty. Through coincidence, calamity, and kim-chee, the four become friends and discover their cultural and personal identities.

The play runs January 15 - 31. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday performances at 2:00 p.m. at SDSU’s Don Powell Theatre, 5500 Campanile Drive San Diego 92182.

(If you prefer to mail hard copies, you may send two copies of your script to SDAART’s P.O. Box.) Please include a bio (100-words or less), and full contact information including a home address and phone number. Playwrights may submit a maximum of two plays. No entry fee required. Winners will receive a new playwright certificate and production of their scripts. All authors agree to permit SDAART to produce their contest entry play if the theatre should wish to do so. Authors retain copyright and full ownership of their plays.

Actors Workshop at SDAFF

Please join us for an actors workshop and auditions at SDAFF (San Diego Asian Film Festival) on Oct. 24 from 2-4 pm THIS SATURDAY. It will be held at the Mission Valley Double Tree Hotel in the San Diego II room.

Actor/Comedian Randall Park will talk about his experiences and give advice. The first hour will cover how Randall got into acting, getting an agent, headshots, audition strategies, the market for asian actors, q+a, etc. You do not have to be Asian to attend! Bring friends!

The second hour will be auditions for Kim-Bap, a new play by SDAART's president, Elise Prosser, which will be produced Jan. 15-31, 2010 at SDSU.

SDAART is also casting for a ten-minute play festival in may 2010, Asian American heritage month.

Peter Cirino, a director and a professor of theater at SDSU, will conduct various exercises and film actors reading the sides to improve performances.

Inner Views: Asian American Voices

WHAT: SDAART’s new play festival Inner Views: Asian American Voices is intended to explore Asian American identities and experiences. Playwrights from all over the country are encouraged to submit new, original, never-produced plays, 5-10 minutes in length and less than 10 pages, that explore perspectives of Asian Americans (Pacific Rim or Indian Subcontinental cultures). Selected plays will be produced by SDAART during May 2010 with local directors, actors, designers, and dramaturgs.

WHEN: Deadline for submission is December 1, 2009. Playwrights will be notified of acceptance by February 1, 2010.

WHERE: Inner Views: Asian American Voices will be produced in San Diego during Asian Heritage Month – May 2010 – in celebration of SDAART’s 15th anniversary.
